Did you know a Senate Committee was in Vancouver?
I bet you didn't unless you read blogs, listen to CBC or are linked to The Tyee.ca.
You did not hear about this, because the media in Vancouver is largely owned by one company, Canwest, and the subject of the Senate Hearings is the concentration of Media in Canada. Canwest did not send a reporter to the hearings.
No where in Canada is media concentration a bigger problem than in BC.
Vancouver's two daily english language newspapers are owned by Canwest. Victoria's only daily is owned by Canwest.
BCTV is owned 100% by Canwest and has approximately 70% of the market between 5 and 7 pm, prime time news.
Two "national dailies" are available in BC, The National Post, (owned by Canwest) and the Globe and Mail. That means 90% of the news in daily papers in Vancouver comes from one company, Canwest.
See a good report on this situation at The Tyee.ca.
Some things just need to be said...

Scary, Rick. Canadians tend to think of media consolidation as a problem in the United States, forgetting what a great job Canwest is doing swallowing up Western Canada's media outlets. Frightening that they could shut down coverage of the Senate Hearings so effectively.
